Meet David

Hello, I’m David Phillips, the founder of Shoreline Learning. I have been a teacher for over 25 years, specialising in ICT, Computing, Business Studies, Maths, and Science.

I began my teaching career after completing a PGCE in Economics and Business Studies at The Institute of Education, University College London, and since then I’ve held a number of teaching and leadership roles. For ten years, I was Head of ICT at Borden Grammar School in Kent, where my department consistently achieved excellent results at GCSE and A Level. I’ve also worked at schools in Spain, China, and across Kent, giving me a wide perspective on education and different learning styles

More recently, I worked at Portal House School in Dover, a specialist school for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. This role gave me valuable experience in adapting teaching approaches, building trust, and helping young people overcome barriers to learning. Supporting these students to grow in confidence and achieve success was one of the most rewarding parts of my career.

Over the years, I’ve developed a strong interest in creating learning resources. Some of my ICT teaching materials were (and are still currently) used by thousands of schools worldwide, and I was even nominated at the TES Resource Creator Awards in 2011. More recently, I’ve created educational apps for platforms like Scratch, App Inventor, and Python, which have had over 5 million downloads globally.

What I enjoy most, however, is helping young people grow in confidence and achieve their potential. Whether a student needs support to overcome difficulties in a subject, or guidance to push for top grades, I take pride in adapting my teaching to fit their needs.

Outside of teaching, I enjoy website building, social media marketing, and hands-on DIY projects. I have also spent some of my career as a builder, so if you ever need your house repointed then let me know. I live in Whitstable, Kent, and I’m delighted to now be offering tuition locally as well as online through Shoreline Learning.
